ATK Mohun Bagan beat SC East Bengal in ISL's first Kolkata Derby
ATK Mohun Bagan FC emerged victorious in ISL's first ever Kolkata derby. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal share a great rivalry in the history of Indian Football. Roy Krishna and Manvir Singh scored for them to get 3 points from the match and go top of the ISL points table.
SC East Bengal joined the league quite late and they had less time to sign good players and make an excellent team. They have Jeje Lalpekhlua in their squad but they didn't start with him. Jeje is the second highest goal scorer in the league after Sunil Chettri. They could have started with CK Vineeth who has more goals to his name than Balwant Singh.
First Half : Big Match Pressure was evident on players
As we all know both these clubs share a great history. They have played against each other so many times and this is the first time when fans were not their to cheer their team up. In the first half, both the teams gone with safety first approach.
SC East Bengal enjoyed the majority of possession but ATK Mohun Bagan were more clinical in their attacks. ATK Mohun Bagan have the benefit of playing one match that helped them in the tuning among the players. SC East Bengal were playing their first match of the season and it was clearly visible that they took time to find the rhythm.
There were some chances created in first half but none of them find the back of the net. Prabir Das' cross in 10th minute hit the crossbar. SC East Bengal’s Anthony Pilkington then received a pass outside ATK Mohun Bagan’s penalty box in the 20th minute and got a shot away that went straight into goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja’s grateful hands. The best chance of the half, though, went to the Mariners in the 36th minute when Javier Hernandez did well to get the ball under control inside a cramped penalty area before firing a venomous effort on goal that forced Debjit into a save.
Balwant Singh also had a good opportunity to put SC East Bengal ahead two minutes later when a delicious cross from the right found him near the six-yard box. However, Balwant couldn’t keep his attempt on target as the chance went a-begging and the score remained goalless at halftime.
Second Half : Roy Krishna and Manvir Singh seal the deal for ATK Mohun Bagan
ATK gained the lead in just four minutes after half time. Fijian striker Roy Krishna got the ball outside the penalty box and he had a chance to get his shot away, which he did and find the back of the net.
SC East Bengal responded strongly in search of an equaliser and came close to levelling the score a minute before the hour mark following a quick break that culminated in Balwant shooting wide of goal. Maghoma also had a shot from distance that failed to test the ATK Mohun Bagan goalkeeper in the 63rd minute.
After coming off the bench, Manvir made a superb run that saw him carry the ball from near the halfway line to the box and he fired a stinging left-footed shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 for his team.
